Embezzlement in motor vehicle tax funds uncovered

KARACHI: A major corruption case involving the embezzlement of a staggering Rs50 million in motor vehicle tax funds has now come to the fore.

Twenty-seven employees of Sindh's provincial excise and taxation department have been suspended and inquiries have been launched against them. According to officials, these employees were involved in the embezzlement.

It is believed that the motor vehicle funds were collected in various branches of the National Bank and then misappropriated by bank employees and tax department officials.

After receiving credible information about the misappropriation of motor vehicle taxes, authorities launched an investigation.

During the probe, it was discovered that officials from the tax department and employees of the National Bank were hand in hand in embezzling motor vehicle tax funds worth millions of Rupees.

The modus operandi of this scam was that the funds were only deposited on paper and no actual transactions took place.
