KARACHI: Tuwairqi Steel Mills Ltd (TSML), the first steel-maker in the private sector in Pakistan, plans to start alternative energy production and manufacture of engineering goods, mill’s official said on Friday.
“TSML is contemplating to set up a solar module manufacturing factory, capable of producing up to 12 megawatts of solar modules initially, at a cost of $2.5m by the end of 2010,” said Amna Waheed, an official of TSML in her presentation.
A solar cells manufacturing plant will also be set up, which will be capable of manufacturing up to 30 megawatts of solar cells in 2011 at an estimated cost of $15 million.
Research is underway for a $30 million wind energy pilot project.
Earlier, National Bank of Pakistan (NBP), President, Syed Ali Raza inaugurated the TSML Engineering Applied Research Center. NBP is one of main stakeholders in TSML. Raza said that Pakistan must utilize its indigenous talent in engineering. “It can no more rely on foreign engineers as they were not coming to Pakistan following travel advisories.”
TSML CEO Tariq Barlas said that the Mills injected equity of $100 million in Pakistan. He said that majority of engineers working at TSML are Pakistanis. Zaigham Adil Rizvi, Director (Project), TSML, said that Mills use indigenous solar technology that Pakistani engineers had developed.
