Samsung's Galaxy Tablet aims to trump iPad


SEOUL: South Korea's Samsung Electronics  on Thursday launched its tablet computer in the domestic market and said it aims to sell more than a million of the Galaxy Tabs worldwide by the end of this year. 

J K Shin, president of the company's mobile business, said the firm plans to offer the Galaxy Tab in various sizes next year as it scrambles to challenge Apple's iPad in the rapidly-growing tablet PC market.

PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA: Facebook on Wednesday moved to become the heart of smartphone lifestyles by making it easy for people to find deals at nearby shops and connect with mobile software applications.

The world's top online social networking service updated its mobile platform to let people check into third-party applications with a click of a Facebook sign-in icon and also let them see bargains available at local businesses.

Nokia ups the ante, tries to reclaim lost ground

Henri Mattila from Nokia is confident despite the havoc wreaked by competitors to his company’s smartphone sales over the past year – he carries four N8s in his pocket.

Mattila, Nokia’s Head of Category Marketing for Middle East and Africa, is in Pakistan for the launch of the N8, a phone that the company hopes will take back what it has lost in smartphone sales earlier this year. The phone runs on Nokia’s Symbian 3 operating system and hopes to take on Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android and of course, the BlackBerry.

SINGAPORE: Apple has for the first time outpaced Blackberry-maker Research in Motion in global smartphone sales thanks to the success of its iPhone 4, a report said Friday.

Industry tracker IDC said Apple sold 14.1 million iPhone units in the third quarter while Canada’s Research in Motion shipped 12.4 million Blackberry devices.

“The company’s record shipment performance can be attributed to the introduction of the iPhone 4 in 17 new countries last quarter,” said the International Data Corporation (IDC).
