Work starts on quay wall of KPT’s deep-water container port
















KARACHI: Minister for Ports and Shipping Babar Ghauri along with Chinese Vice Minister for Transport Xu Zuyuan opened spadework on the quay wall of Karachi Port Trust’s (KPT) $1.6 billion Pakistan Deep Water Container Port (PDWCP) Tuesday.

“The project would upgrade the capability of Karachi Port and change Pakistani ports and shipping industry with impact on the overall economy,” remarked the visiting Chinese deputy transport minister during the inaugural of marine protection works and construction of quay wall for the PDWCP here at a local hotel.

The PDWCP project, being developed at Keamari Groyne, would be completed in different phases including the Marine Protection Work, Quay Wall Construction Work, Dredging and Reclamation Works and Navigational Aids Work.

China Water and Electric Company being done with almost 40 percent work in the first phase of Dredging and Reclamation Works, the KPT Tuesday entered into the second phase under which China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) would construct three breakwaters, a sand dyke and a 1500-meter long quay wall including four berths each having 375 meters length at a cost of $250 million. The three breakwaters, called Keamari Extension, Oyster Rock Breakwater and Manora Breakwater, would have a 50-year design life.
